1.1 Overview
From 1570 to her death in 1603, Queen Elizabeth I reigned over a country that was rapidly developing from a small group of islands off the coast of Europe to a world-wide trading power and, ultimately, an extensive empire. It was during this time that the foundations of the expansion into the New World were laid. Little England defeated one of the world powers of the era, Spain, and began to establish British sea power across the globe. Elizabeth weathered various plots against her life, but was distressed by the execution of her cousin, Mary. Finally, Elizabeth did not solve the problems in Ireland, which were to plague the United Kingdom for centuries to come.
