Curriculum Description
This fourth workbook looks at the reign of Mary I, who was the daughter of Henry the VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Mary was a staunch Catholic and wanted England to be returned to “the true faith” under the Pope. However, many of her subjects were committed Protestants and this led to persecution and bloodshed. Her reign also laid the foundations for several centuries of anti-Catholic feeling and legislation in the United Kingdom.

1.1 Overview
This workbook will look at the short but turbulent reign of Mary Tudor. It was a time of violent religious struggle as Mary tried to re-establish the Roman Catholic faith and stamp out what she considered the Protestant “heresy.” Many of the religious freedoms that people had experienced under the reign of Edward were swept away, and people found that they were liable to be burned at the stake if they did not accept the old religion. Mary also caused a great deal of trouble with her people by insisting on marrying the Catholic Philip of Spain, which led to nearly 50 years of conflict with the Spanish Empire.
