1.1 Overview

This section looks at the long reign of Henry VIII and the many changes that took place between 1509 and 1547. The greatest changes were in religion. When Henry came to the throne, England was united with Europe under the all-encompassing rule of the Roman Catholic Church. However between 1517 and 1550, the Reformation, first led by Luther and Calvin, convulsed all Europe. In England, the change of religion was more political than religious, but nonetheless profoundly affected the lives of all people from the king to the poorest peasant. There were several important figures who rose and fell from power under Henry; Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas More, and Thomas Cromwell being the main ones.
