Class description

This is where it all starts. Learn chords, simple strums, and tuning in a fun, relaxed group setting. You’ll be introduced to the basic elements of rhythm and harmony that will have you making music in no time! Students will work on beginner Music Theory, finger mechanics, melody chords and building their ear, on their way to becoming excellent musicians.

Students Must commit to practicing 30 MINUTES EVERY DAY.

Guitar 1 is the introduction to a comprehensive course (Guitar 1, 2, and 3) where proper technique is always stressed, with the of each student successfully playing any piece of music that interests him or her, both now and in the future.

You will learn to read music, as it opens the written history of music, which then allows you to play music from any period in history.

Music theory is studied and allows the student to understand musical process.  Music history, as it pertains to modern guitar, is also covered where the people who were instrumental in developing the instrument’s role in popular music are studied .

At the end of these three courses, students will have been introduced to scales, intervals (melodic and harmonic) and chords.   Using these concepts, you will be able to play everything from simple pieces, as well as duets, chord solos, and ensemble works.  More importantly, you will understand how they work, musically.

We play traditional folk songs, music from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, and of course the more modern, Blues, Jazz and Rock and Roll.

Smoke on the Water, Dream On, and Born to be Wild will be learned – in part or in whole.  These tunes reinforce the skills that are taught in class.  Guitar 1 is for the absolute beginner.

Students leave Guitar 1 with the following:

  • Basic open position chords: A, D, E, G, C, Am, Em, A7, B7, D7, E7, G7
  • A sense of playing single notes and a few licks
  • Essential boom-chicka strums in 4/4 and 3/4 time
  • I-IV-V tunes in A, D, G, and E
  • A solid sense on how to read a “lead sheet”
  • The desire to keep playingGuitar 1 is for the absolute beginner.

This Class is 10 classes.  Each Class is recorded and students may review the class, at no additional cost, in full or in part as needed to reinforce learning.  They may also view a class they have missed.

About the instructors

I have played guitar since I was 12. My dad taught me the basics and I took off from there. Through Middle School and High School, I played in several different bands, and for a variety of events. I received my BME (Bachelor of Music Education) from Appalachian State University. I am able to teach any instrument, but prefer Guitar and Brass. I’ve been married to my lovely bride, Carroll Sue, for 27 years. In that time, I have served as Worship Pastor, Teaching Elder and Lay Elder in three different churches. I led Worship in churches for more than 25 of those years. I am picky about the music that I choose for congregations to sing. Not all music is created for God’s Glory. Many of the songs that get passed off as “worship music,” or “Christian music,” are person-centered, not God centered. I am just as particular with the music I use when teaching. If you or your parents have convictions about the music we use in class, please talk with me before the course begins, so we can make sure that your convictions are honored. Others describe me as patient and easy going. I really enjoy being with my family. We like to camp, read and laugh. We laugh a whole lot! I really enjoy teaching and seeing students progress toward their goals. I look forward to working with you. Feel free to contact me about scheduling, questions, or Individual Lessons.
